Nonlinear Endogenous Business Cycles: Zambelli-Goodwin Excursions in Cellular Automata Worlds

Chapter 13 in Keynesian, Sraffian, Computable and Dynamic Economics, 2021, pp 311-327 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract Cellular automata (CA) can be used to study nonlinear endogenous business cycles. This leads to an examination of the classification of business cycles based on Wolfram’s four classes of the dynamical behaviour of cellular automata. Following the path set by Zambelli and Goodwin, a study of business cycles could be undertaken using a flexible accelerator implemented through an elementary CA. The microfoundations of business cycles can be analysed in terms of the transition rules of the CA.
