A chapter in Entrepreneurship, Technology Commercialisation, and Innovation Policy in Africa, 2021, pp 279-300 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This chapter provides an assessment of available evidence with regard to the potentials for transformative innovation policies in Africa. Using Côte d’Ivoire and Nigeria as case studies, the chapter highlights opportunities and gaps in policymaking in the two West African economies with respect to science, technology and innovation policy theory and practice. The discourse builds on the latest advances in innovation policy theory and practice in order to offer a more structured view of African countries’ potentials for better-informed innovation policymaking decisions and for more impactful innovation investments. Issues ranging from governance and coordination among innovation stakeholders, funding, human capital, infrastructure, and evidence gaps are discussed in relation to their influence on innovation strategy and policy implementation given economic, social, environmental and sustainability imperatives.
