Immersion in the Far East
Hermann Simon
Chapter 12 in Many Worlds, One Life, 2021, pp 223-240 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract How did Asia become a late love of me? I was touched by the common fates of Germany and Korea, both of which were divided arbitrarily in the aftermath of World War II. Not surprisingly, Asian managers differ from business leaders in the West. Through my immersion in the Far East, I was lucky to experience and accompany the fabulous ascent of China. Over the last few decades, I saw how Chinese industry had to change and continues to evolve. I signed one of the first MBA degree certificates ever awarded in China, and witnessed the birth of the Hermann Simon Business School there. I got to know China’s megacities, but also enjoyed the endless expanses of its beautiful countryside. Nonetheless, China—and Asia in general—remains a mystery to me. Will I ever decode and understand them?
