Political Bystander

Chapter 5 in Many Worlds, One Life, 2021, pp 67-82 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract As a young man, I had politics in my blood. My father was mayor of my hometown for many years. So I grew up in a world of local politics. Later I remained independent and unaffiliated, despite my political activities. I had contact with left-wing groups, and we fought neo-Nazis with a dramatic outcome. The revolutionary mood of 1968 enveloped me, and I took part in large demonstrations. I later became a political student leader. Despite an offer for a post as government minister, I decided against a political career and remained a bystander to politics. This was probably the right decision, because I would not have allowed myself to be constrained by party discipline.
