Abstract: Abstract Some 100 years ago a notice appeared in the journal of the German Mathematical Society that read: “Dr. Emmy Noether has habilitated as a lecturer in mathematics at Göttingen University.” This quiet announcement was actually the resounding final chord in a long struggle that went on for four years and only ended on June 4, 1919, when Noether joined the Göttingen faculty.
