Reactions to Cultural Overtourism

Bruno Frey

Chapter 3 in Overcoming Overtourism, 2021, pp 29-41 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract The impairment of art sites by cultural overtourism has led to anti-tourist movements and social unrest (e.g., Seraphin et al. 2018b; Clancy 2019). This has happened mostly in Spain, France, and Italy and also in the Netherlands. These protests have been discussed extensively in the traditional and social media (Zeng and Gerritsen 2014) under the keywords “touristification” and “touristophobia” (Milano 2017, 2018; Milano et al. 2018; Peeters et al. 2018: 29–30; Hughes 2018; Zerva et al. 2019). They are particularly visible in cities such as Barcelona, Lisbon, and Venice.
