A Positive Alternative: Revived Originals

Chapter 4 in Overcoming Overtourism, 2021, pp 45-62 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract I propose a radically different approach to address the pressing problem of cultural overtourism. Instead of limiting demand, which would exclude many art lovers, supply should be increased by providing alternative offers. I call these additional new cultural sites Revived Originals. By creating a broader range of sites, many more tourists are able to enjoy culture. At first sight, the proposal to expand the supply of cultural sites seems absurd and has been declared in the literature to be impossible (e.g., Smeral 2019). Cultural sites have long been considered to be historically determined and cannot be increased. But after taking a closer look, the idea of expanding the supply proves to be both reasonable and feasible.
