Revived Originals and Possible Counterarguments

Bruno Frey

Chapter 5 in Overcoming Overtourism, 2021, pp 63-69 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract There are, of course, some counterarguments against my proposal of creating Revived Originals. They raise important issues. But even if some of the objections are perfectly legitimate, they should be considered in comparison to the alternatives discussed above. These either cannot be implemented due to conflicts of interest or do not seem to show any productive results. The proposed alternatives only partially take into account current conditions affecting both residents and tourists interested in culture. They may still be subject to overcrowding with long queues, noise, stress, vandalism, crime, and improper behavior. In addition, one should consider the future prospects of overtourism, which paint a gloomy picture. The measures proposed or taken so far do not seem to be an adequate response to this discouraging outlook.
