Abstract: Abstract In this chapter, the narrative regarding the developments up to now in two main policy areas, private sector access to finance and the level and structure of taxation, will be linked with policy proposals that could lead to a turnaround of Greece. The focus of this chapter on private sector access to finance, with a disproportional emphasis on details regarding the issue of handling the problem of nonperforming loans (NPLs), and on the issue of taxation, in particular the taxation of labor, does not mean that other policy issues are not equally important and do not need to be advanced at the same time. But while, for example, in the case of structural reforms there is little to argue—one has to document where policies in Greece deviate from international best practices and adopt policy initiatives accordingly; an emphasis on these two policy areas is justified given their importance and the fact that the design of policies needs to be based on a more elaborate analysis of facts. Thus, this chapter will attempt to provide this analysis and some of these facts. Parts of this chapter are based on Mitsopoulos and Pelagidis, 2010, Give Greece a Chance, Intereconomics, 50(2): pp. 91–97.
