Chapter 3 in Technology Meets Flowers, 2021, pp 51-76 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract The flower production process has been industrialized. Flowers can be grown in the open air or under controlled conditions in glasshouses. Glass city, a dense area of glasshouses, is a dominant producer of flowers and plants and a frontrunner in the use of fertilizers and carbon dioxide enrichment, as well as emergent technologies, such as LED lighting, robots, drones, and climate-controlled automation. Glass city is powered by a natural gas field below its surface and by industrial waste heat, including carbon dioxide, from a nearby industrial cluster. Successful strategies for growing flowers near large cities and their impact on business ecosystems are presented.
