Chapter Chapter 7 in German Family Enterprises, 2021, pp 129-172 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This chapter describes the disruptions that could jeopardize the development or even the longevity of the family-owned enterprise. The universe of potential root causes of disruptions is structured into “mutually exclusive and comprehensively exhaustive” branches from very general areas to ever more detailed causes. Various logical differentiations are applied in order to structure the phenomena. The categories of development are differentiated into alternatives of continuation, merger, and disappearance. The general areas are root causes originated in the environment, the business, the management, or the owners. Each of these branches is further detailed. References are made to various research reports analyzing the frequency of the downfall of family and nonfamily enterprises and the respective triggering events. Thus, a multidimensional analysis of the negative side of a potential company development is provided.
