Chapter Chapter 19 in Adventure Finance, 2021, pp 183-189 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract In Chapter 16, we saw Mapula Trust convert their entire loan to IkamvaYouth into a grant through a forgivable loan, but this is not a viable strategy for most funders. In this next journey, we join Rahil Rangwala from the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation as he develops a contract that aims to incentivize school operators in India to achieve better educational outcomes by linking the cost of the loan to impact outcomes. In other words, the contract he designs allows the school operators to qualify for interest rate rebates through achieving pre-defined impact goals. This is an example of impact-linked financing: the linking of financial incentives to the achievement of social and/or environmental performance targets.
