A chapter in Innovations in Social Finance, 2021, pp 69-96 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Women entrepreneurs play a crucial role in Canadian economic development. Financing has always been one of the major concerns of, and barriers to, women entrepreneurs in reaching their goals. Over 83% of women-owned small and medium enterprises (SMEs) tend to use their own personal finances to start their businesses (Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada, 2018) Research from around the world suggests that women face barriers to financing due to their gender, which has significant implications for the global economy. On the other hand, social finance is a financing mechanism that has successfully provided financial resources to women entrepreneurs around the world. In this chapter, using a comparative case study approach, we explore and analyze successful Canadian examples of social finance that are helping women in business and entrepreneurship.
