Chapter Chapter 24 in The Palgrave Handbook of African Entrepreneurship, 2022, pp 595-618 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract African entrepreneurship is unique because of its pluralistic nature and multiple variations in entrepreneurial orientations, ecosystems, practices and cases across Africa. Yet, the implications of methodological approach in uncovering the heterogeneity of entrepreneurship phenomena have been taken for granted in previous entrepreneurship research. Therefore, we examine the use of case studies and fosters new directions that reflect on the challenges, methods and prospects of utilizing case studies in African entrepreneurship. We argue that with necessary steps to ensure rigour and objectivity, the case study approach can serve as an important research method to unpack often complex and institutional factors embedded in African entrepreneurship contexts. This is especially pertinent with entrepreneurial phenomena and cases that are more difficult to examine using purely quantitative approaches. Thus, we provide reflective commentaries and recommendations on how to implement case study research in African entrepreneurship contexts. In conclusion, we made suggestions that point to new directions for the use of case studies in African entrepreneurship.
