Chapter Chapter 2 in Co-Innovation Platforms, 2022, pp 21-49 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract Platforms facilitate connections between people and organizations so that they can pursue an array of unique complementary relationships that otherwise might not be feasible. While the platform concept has a rich history, two prominent types of platforms have emerged, transaction platforms and innovation platforms. We introduce one type of innovation platform, a co-innovation platform, where the primary strategic objective is facilitating innovation via collaborative arrangements among external actors as well as with the platform. This chapter explores four key questions: (1) What are the prominent types of platforms and how do they differ?; (2) How does a co-innovation platform create and distribute value?; (3) What factors underlie an effective co-innovation platform strategy?; and (4) What governance mechanisms are critical to developing and maintaining a successful co-innovation platform?
