Chapter Chapter 11 in Rentier Capitalism and Its Discontents, 2021, pp 279-286 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract This chapter explores some broader issues arising from the book. Section one poses a fundamental question ‘What is the economy for?’ It argues that an economy must ensure sustainable development and human flourishing for all, and that rentierrentiers capitalism is not fit for purpose. The second section examines what policy measures and social alliances must occur to transform the existing economic system to better serve the people and preserve the planet. In the third section, the Covid-19 pandemic crisis is briefly discussed. It explores how rentierrentiers interests and activities were entrenched by countries’ responses to the pandemic. Lessons can be drawn from the crisis on how to tackle the threat of rentierismrentierism to humanity.
