Chapter Chapter 4 in Structural Change, Productivity, and Climate Nexus in Agriculture, 2021, pp 121-192 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This chapter helps in understanding the main structural changes in EU agriculture and the role of this economic activity in the economic system. The review of the previous research methodologies that focus on the investigation of structural changes in economic systems and agriculture allows relevant structural change measures to be selected and a methodological research framework to be set covering different aspects of structural change. The changing role of agriculture, forestry, and fishing economic activity in the EU and member states is studied, applying structural change indices, the benchmarking of changes in the shares of economic activities in the EU economy, and applying shift-share analysis for employment and GVA. The evolution of agricultural systems is investigated, employing index decomposition analysis to decompose changes in the average farm size measures at the EU level, in member states, and at the level of farming types. Later, the main driving forces of structural changes in EU agriculture are discussed. Finally, concluding remarks and policy implications are provided.
