Abstract:
Abstract Ecosystems are a driving force for innovation. Whilst the term “ecosystem” is increasingly used, often a common understanding of its real terminology is missing. This lack of understanding often hinders a successful strategy implementation. The term “ecosystem” inherits four different concepts, of which all are to be characterized through very different goals and meanings. To lay the groundwork for future productive ecosystem development and management, these differences are elaborated upon. Based thereupon, the most important managerial implications are posed within the underlying article. It is expanded upon the relevance and feasibility of the ecosystem concept, on how to create a fit between the ecosystem and firm strategy and, finally, on how to overtake an orchestrator role as well as how to build a sound ecosystem strategy most successfully.
