Chapter Chapter 6 in Trade Wins or Trade Wars, 2021, pp 101-129 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract We conduct a study of the public debate on Free Trade Agreements by analysing news articles and readers’ comments published in the Polish online media between 1996 and 2019. Working on a large sample of online articles and readers’ posts, we conduct content analysis of seven Polish internet news outlets and investigate how much expert knowledge is contained in the news articles written by journalists as well as accompanying comments posted by readers. We also investigate how the demand and supply of the news on international trade in Poland compare to those in other European countries. The analysis considers the economic narratives surrounding the free trade debate in popular media. For that purpose, we scrutinise the co-occurrence and frequency of mentions of individual FTAs in the media as well as explore the broader economic and political context in which trade deals are discussed.
