Chapter Chapter 7 in Entrepreneurial Activity in Malaysia, 2021, pp 135-155 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract It is acknowledged that independent smallholders require entrepreneurship mindsets if they are to survive in modern agriculture. The literature typically focuses on entrepreneurial skills, with minimal attention paid to the learning processes developing these skills. We explore the challenging entrepreneurial learning process—in particular, the transition from production-oriented to multifunctional entrepreneurial activities in the context of palm oil smallholders in Malaysia. Empirical work focusing on 14 independent palm oil smallholders in East Malaysia revealed three significant factors driving entrepreneurial learning: (1) embodying the entrepreneurial identity, (2) crossing the boundaries of palm oil dependency and (3) community collaboration. This chapter provides insights for policymakers that deals with rural development as it highlights a different way of capacity building of rural community via entrepreneurial learning.
