Chapter Chapter 1 in Not Paying the Rent, 2021, pp 3-22 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This chapter begins by explaining the background, motivations, and contents of the book. It goes on to examine the condition of rent as an economic practice, starting by a definition and showing examples of its ill-effects on development. Rent describes the appropriation of surplus from economic activity that is based on power as opposed to profit in capitalism where the surplus is based on markets. Overcoming rentism is effectively a redistribution policy as it appropriates wasteful surplus (rent) through creating open markets (means to profit) that can lead to mass incomes and to mass markets for consumption.
