Abstract:
Abstract The article deals with the possible solutions to the problem of ongoing climate change through digital technologies. Since the largest share of emissions of harmful substances into the atmosphere falls on the oil and gas sector, the purpose of the study has been to analyze the role of digitalization in the implementation of the sustainable development ‘Climate action’ goal by international oil and gas companies. In this regard, this article discusses the role of such technologies as Big Data, machine learning, artificial intelligence (AI), 3D printing, cognitive analytics, the Internet of Things, robots, digital twins, including visualization and blockchain in reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions as well as emissions of other greenhouse gases by major foreign and Russian oil and gas companies. The authors applied a systematic approach to the study of this issue, which made it possible to converge such diverse elements as digitalization, operating activity of oil and gas companies, sustainable development goals and carbon footprint reduction. The article proves that digital technologies, in a strategic perspective, could make a significant contribution to climate change prevention and help oil and gas companies to reduce their emissions into the atmosphere. The results of the article are of practical importance since oil and gas companies are only just starting to implement digital technologies into their operations. Therefore, they could use the conclusions of the study in the process of their strategic planning.
