How Does Green Robotics Differ from Conventional Robotics: Comparative Analysis

Abstract: Abstract The research purpose is to identify which robots can be classified as green devices, and how green robotics differs from conventional robotics. It should be noted that at the present, research in this area is not systematic. An attempt is made by the authors to identify criteria for the environmental friendliness of robotics, based on the analysis of the available specialized scientific publications. The proposed criteria are the following: the level of energy consumption, manufacturing materials, the ability to integrate harmoniously into the ecosystem and the intended purpose of devices. Based on the established criteria, a comparative analysis of conventional and green robotics with examples is provided. It is determined that devices classified as green should have at least one of the following characteristics: their energy consumption is optimized, they use renewable energy sources, they are created from biodegradable materials, they are harmoniously integrated into the ecosystem and are designed to solve problems in the field of ecology. Given that robotics is one of the cross-cutting digital technologies, the findings of this article may be of value for further climate change research amidst Industry 4.0. The research should be continued in order to supplement and to precise the proposed criteria.
