The Path of Workers
Santiago Sánchez-Pagés
Chapter Chapter 7 in The Representation of Economics in Cinema, 2021, pp 121-151 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract The gradual worsening in the quality of jobs in Western countries is due to two significant changes. One is the global competition from emerging countries and the resulting offshoring of many industries. The other has been automation. This chapter reviews the films about work that deal with these pressing issues as well as with unionization, the increasing prevalence of monopsonies and mass migration. The chapter also underscores that the present-day issues of overwork, low pay, and job insecurity portrayed in films about contemporary working-class characters and migrant workers are very similar to those appearing in films set during the Industrial Revolution and the labor conflicts of the early twentieth century.
