Chapter Chapter 2 in Managing Crises in Tourism, 2021, pp 13-31 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Small Island Developing States (SIDS) share features and experiences that set them apart from more developed mainland destinations. The distinct context of SIDS is captured in the differences in the role of tourism in the economy and the resources upon which the industry is dependent. The purpose of this chapter is to examine the local context of Caribbean island states by exploring these two main differences that set them apart from more developed mainland destinations and the unique challenges that arise owing to these peculiarities. The discussion proceeds firstly with a general insight into SIDS. An analysis of island tourism follows focusing on its development, the role of tourism in the economy and the resources upon which the industry is dependent.
