Chapter Chapter 1 in Special Economic Zones, 2021, pp 3-24 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This chapter shows that China, which hosts over 50% of global SEZs, has successfully used zones as an effective vehicle to foster economic reforms and economic transformation. Inspired by China’s success, African countries implemented SEZs but their performance is dismal due to factors such as infrastructure deficits and institutional weaknesses.
