Abstract Bonds and cash are fundamental asset classes that frequently form the core of defensive investment portfolios. This chapter discusses their primary investment benefits and historical returns. It provides a detailed overview of the major risks in bond investing. The chapter introduces the three major global credit rating systems and assesses the performance of the S&P system. It examines common shapes of a yield curve and its role as a leading market indicator. The shape of the Treasury yield curve provides valuable insights into investor sentiment and interest rate expectations.
