Abstract: Abstract Precious metals have a place in diversified investment portfolios. This chapter covers the four common precious metals of gold, silver, platinum and palladium. It describes their investment merits and historical performance. Gold as a defensive asset has generated attractive long-term investment returns. It is a special precious metal with many unique properties. The chapter introduces the key characteristics of gold and its primary price drivers. It illustrates the diversification effect of gold and its potential to enhance portfolio returns. The chapter provides a range of options to invest in precious metals.
