The Classical Style in Contemporary Geometry: Views from a Person Working in the Field

A chapter in When Form Becomes Substance, 2022, pp 107-124 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract As is well known, geometry undergone revolutionary shifts of paradigm during all the last century. This in many cases implies, for instance in the case of algebraic geometry, that history, or at least the history of this discipline, is a discrete, but nevertheless strong and familiar, presence in the work of the persons active in this field. In this perspective the geography of contemporary geometry is silently unified, more than dramatically split as one could think, from the history. The seminar will address this issue, trying to bring some evidence and concrete examples from the experience of a person working in this field. A major attention will be payed to the history of classical and modern rationality problems, for some famous examples of algebraic varieties.
