Abstract:
Abstract The Victorian period saw the emergence of light satire in response to the excesses of Georgian period. Cruder satire developed in the last quarter of the century. The review of images is based on the caricatures in Vanity Fair, a weekly periodical for the ‘ruling elite’ which showcased the great and good in society, both in Britain and abroad. A review of contemporary US, French, German caricatures of financial events is provided to compare British caricatures. In the field of image theory, Gombrich’s cartoonist’s armoury is analysed, with commentary on more recent writers such as Maidment. I suggest a methodology entitled P (ublisher bias) E (ditorial techniques) A (rtistic techniques) R (readers’ views) L (egal censorship) to analyse prints. Whilst there have been numerous studies of Victorian periodicals and artists (as well as of the earlier pre-Victorian period), this book represents a unique study of financial images both Victorian and earlier pre-Victorian periods.
