Abstract: Abstract In the realistic periodicals (ILN, Graphic) either individual court scenes are depicted realistically, or storyboards are used to convey selective scenes of the court process. The tone reflects a subtle form of morality, the juxtaposition of scenes conveying the periodicals’ view of the protagonists (both villains and victims). The comedic effect of similar moralistic comments in comic periodicals offers a more direct emotional response in the minds of the readers. The cross-over in media coverage of the legal process is illustrated in a comparison between the ‘high art’ moralistic narrative paintings of Frith in his series Race for Wealth and the more cynical response in the comic-serious periodical, Fun. The realistic periodicals really began to focus on trials of white-collar criminals at the time of the CGB failure in 1878, continuing to the trials of Jabez Balfour and Ernest Hooley in the 1890s. This reflected public disquiet that the legal process in the intervening period did not punish the real transgressors.
