Chapter Chapter 4 in Panonomics, 2021, pp 41-52 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract Time—the fourth dimension—is the key focal point and metric in the panonomic model. The COVID-19 pandemic and associated lockdowns have left us with a vastly distorted sense of time. As we make our way through, and hopefully emerge from, the pandemic, we are immediately faced with the time-critical challenges presented by climate collapse. Considering our deep interrelationship with time and building on Mazzucato’s work around mission-oriented economies, Hawking’s seminal concept of ‘Imaginary Time’, Heidegger’s interplay of time and care, and the three primary concepts of time used in orthodox economics (historical, logical and intemporal), here we introduce a fourth concept of transcendental time, envisaged as an onward movement toward the future in an upward spiral motion. Contextualising panonomics within a future conceived of as a perpetual series of ‘Future Nows’, the accumulation of time is proposed as our principal collective mission and the key measurement of our shared and forward progress.
