A chapter in Complex Symmetries, 2021, pp 231-244 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract This article examines symmetrical structures in Andrzej Panufnik’s Pentasonata for piano (1984). It presents the category of spatial symmetry, which results from the structure of the work, and narrative symmetry, which is determined by the musical process in time. Examples are discussed of simple symmetries, present at the level of motifs, and complex symmetries resulting from the transformations of the thematic material and visible in the overall organisation of the piece. Finally, the number ‘five’ and the three–note cell are analysed, respectively, as a regulator of the form and the basis of the thematic material of the composition.
