Chapter 3 in Entrepreneurship and Social Entrepreneurship in the MENA Region, 2022, pp 49-74 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract The concept of entrepreneurship in general has been addressed as the force of creative destruction. This contradictory title of the concept is logical since it describes the emergence of new ideas, business ventures, services, products, and creation of new jobs, while the “destroying” part refers to dismantling the existing balance in the external industry environment, ultimately leading to higher dynamism of competition (Dzenopoljac et al., The Context for Business in Kuwait, 2021). This notion dates back to the early work of Schumpeter (Capitalism, Socialism and Democracy. In Capitalism, Socialism and Democracy. Routledge Publishing, 1943), whose views of entrepreneurship was pointed towards economic growth. On the other hand, the theory of social entrepreneurship started evolving from 1970s, when the term “social entrepreneur” appeared (Ebrashi, Social Entrepreneurship Theory and Sustainable Social Impact. Social Responsibility Journal, 2013). In this chapter, we will assess the concept of social entrepreneurship in regard to its positive impacts and its criticisms. Additionally, the chapter will focus on key differences between entrepreneurship and social entrepreneurship. The chapter will be permeated with the state of social entrepreneurship in the Arab world.
