Educational Performance in Swedish Schools—What Are the Facts?

Abstract: Abstract In the 2000s, Swedish elementary and secondary school students’ scores in international assessments began to fall, which suggests both a long-term and substantial weakening of the Swedish school system. The chapter provides a detailed presentation of what is known about the performance of Swedish students before the first TIMSS assessment in 1995 and the subsequent decline in international tests. It shows that the downward trend in attainment is a result of deteriorating scores across the board, from the highest-performing students to those who obtain the lowest scores. Moreover, the chapter suggests that the decline in knowledge among Swedish students is likely to have strong effects on future economic growth. A rough calculation based on updated cross-country estimates suggests that the Swedish growth rate per capita may fall by 0.4–0.5 percentage points.
