Chapter 2 in Design Thinking for New Business Contexts, 2022, pp 9-26 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract This chapter offers a succinct introduction to the emergent nature of design thinking and its transformative role in directing and driving organisational innovation. It starts with a brief discussion as to the origins of design thinking from the late 1960s, outlining key developments in its growing maturity as a strategic organisational asset. Key concepts and models are offered which enable the organisation (be it in the commercial sector or non-profit/public sector) to utilise and draw upon established design thinking strategies and tools to foster organisational competitiveness. Design thinking in SMEs is critically interrogated, exploring and debating the primary challenges that SMEs and innovative start-ups encounter. Finally, this chapter concludes by offering an overview as to the future trajectories of design thinking as a value-added business asset.
