Abstract When banks regain the scene in Western Europe during the twelfth century AD, their business model was in all fundamental aspects similar to that of ancient Roman or Greek banks. At some point during the late Middle AgesMiddle Ages, however, banks develop a new trick which sets them aside from their predecessors in the ancient world and firmly on their way towards modern bankingModern banking institutions.
