Abstract: Abstract Lending by bank deposit creation was invented during the Late Middle AgesMiddle Ages, albeit we have no precise dating for it. In a classic article, the economic historian Abbott Parson Usher argued that the practice was probably well established by the early fifteenth century, when written sources from Venice imply its existence.
