Chapter Chapter 16 in Essays in Economic History, 2022, pp 295-300 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract The essays on metallic standards (gold standard, silver standard, bimetallism) are compared to corresponding entries in the original Palgrave Dictionary. Commonalities are striking: delineation of institutional conditions required for a given standard, recognition of instability of each standard, and discussion of gold points. The “trilemma approach” is highlighted, with application to the gold standard and Bretton Woods system. The schizophrenic attitude of less-developed countries toward financing of the International Monetary Fund and the United Nations is explained.
