Sustainable Development Goals

Constantine Michalopoulos ()

Chapter Chapter 10 in Aid, Trade and Development, 2022, pp 295-311 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract The post-2008 slowdown in trade, finance, and growth of the world economy did little to slow down developing country progress. Building largely on the momentum gained in the early 2000s when globalization was galloping forward, developing countries achieved great progress in reducing poverty and improving the health and education status of their populations. In the fall of 2015, there was sufficient momentum left in multilateral cooperation to permit the UN to adopt a new set of goals for the world community to achieve by the year 2030. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are aspirational and extremely ambitious—eliminate poverty, hunger, and illiteracy for all, reduce income inequality—and include many targets that are not easily measurable. Signed by 170 Heads of State, the SDGs represent humanity’s latest expression of the kind of world we aspire to have: more just, free of poverty and deprivation, a world that respects natural limits. This Chapter discusses the SDGs, technical issues in their design and progress, and challenges in their attainment until 2019, just before the pandemic.
