Chapter 2 in Algorithms for a New World, 2022, pp 13-25 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract I decided to study mathematics almost by accident. When I enrolled in the bachelor course in mathematics at University of Pavia in Italy I didn’t really know what to expect. I had completely insufficient background (coming from a commerce-oriented technical high school) and a vague idea that mathematics would play an increasingly important role in our lives. Above all, I had a great fascination for a difficult subject that was mysterious and feared by every student.
