Abstract: Abstract This chapter is an introduction to the history of “modern” terrorism, especially how different groups evolved over time. It begins with Narodnaya Volya in Russia in the latter half of the nineteenth century and covers terror groups that were active in 2010s and still active as of 2021. Following Rapoport (2004), the groups are described within a framework of four waves of terrorism: anarchist, anti-colonial, new left, and finally the religious wave. While not exhaustive, most of the major terror organizations around the world, the nature of their terrorist activities, and their goals and/or ideological leaning are narrated. Secular terror groups are differentiated from non-secular groups. Our description includes “quasi” terrorist groups as well. We also discuss their non-terror activities and sources of finance depending on the available information.
