Chapter Chapter 28 in Counterexamples in Operator Theory, 2022, pp 503-517 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract It is not easy to give a meaningful and universal definition of the “commutator” of two unbounded operators. For example and as already observed, even when A and B are unbounded self-adjoint operators, AB − BA could be defined only on {0}. Besides, having AB − BA = 0 does not mean that A and B strongly commute, as we have already observed counterexamples previously.
