Abstract:
Abstract The unprecedented rate of photovoltaic panel installations around the world is causing critical problems regarding its end-of-life management. PV modules convert solar energy to electricity throughout their operational life without polluting the environment as opposed to conventional methods. However, the main concern is how the modules should be treated when their life span comes to an end? The circular economy defined based on “Reduce, Recycle, and Recover” can help make the PV supply chain circular and provide PV EoL treatments that are generally economically and environmentally viable. This chapter aims to define and analyze the PV panel supply chain status and discuss the benefits and challenges toward environmental sustainability and circular economy. We also had an in-depth analysis of some business models which foster the circular economy and discuss the challenges and benefits. Last but not least, the existing gap in the literature and practical solutions is highlighted in the PV panel industry.
