A chapter in Handbook of Smart Energy Systems, 2023, pp 2003-2023 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract As the world strives towards climate change mitigation using novel technologies, true energy-efficient transportation via replacing fossil fuels with alternative fuels is no longer out of reach. Since energy-smart transportation and GHG emissions minimization are intertwined, it is observed that several countries have already tried to gradually convert commercial transportation to zero-emission vehicles. A more pervasive use of electric vehicles and alternative fuel vehicles in both public and private transportation could pave the way for a more sustainable future. Hence, it is important to consider developing initiatives for clean energy transformation and strategies for transportation electrification. Green vehicle routing problem (GVRP), as an aspect of green logistics, aims to reduce the energy use and externalities of using vehicles, such as carbon dioxide-equivalents emissions. With the advancement in information and communication technologies, connectivity and automation have been developed to assist energy-smart transportation. New opportunities in urban logistics have paved the way for drones to influence the last mile delivery. It is expected that in the near future, green vehicle routing problem (GVRP) will not be limited to the land roads networks, but will also involve virtual air networks. In summary, we envision that data-driven methods, new technologies and alternative fuels, and digital twin will play a significant role in developing energy-smart transportation systems.
