A chapter in Handbook of Smart Energy Systems, 2023, pp 3181-3199 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Internet of Things (IoT) refers to groups of objects with embedded sensors, processors, software, and other technologies that communicate data with other devices and systems via the Internet. IoT technologies have revolutionized the ongoing IT advancements for personal users, commercial, or even infrastructure contexts. Smart infrastructure and digital energy advancements are also in the midst of a revolution owing to IoT merits. However, there are a number of reservations regarding the risks associated with the development of IoT technology and products, particularly in terms of security and privacy. What are the privacy and security challenges for users? Are there any solutions developed to address these challenges? In this chapter, we aim to discuss the extensiveness of IoT taxonomy in the different personal and commercial areas and highlight the significance of IoT technologies in maintaining energy efficiency. Moreover, we further elaborate on IoT devices’ privacy and security concerns and possible solutions to overcome such challenges.
