The Invention of the Mathematical Formula

Detlef D. Spalt

Chapter Chapter 1 in A Brief History of Analysis, 2022, pp 1-10 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Today, mathematics is unthinkable without formulae. Without: ( a + b ) 2 = ( a + b ) ( a + b ) = a 2 + 2 a b + b 2 $$\displaystyle (a+b)^2=(a+b)(a+b)=a^2+2ab+b^2 $$ nothing works at all.
