Abstract:
Abstract Jean-Baptiste le Rond d’Alembert (1717–1783), another first-rate mathematician, was a slightly younger contemporary of Euler. He was also active as a philosopher and involved in politics. His name, together with that of personifies the French Encyclopédie, published in the years 1751–80, a work which greatly influenced the French Enlightenment. (However, d’Alembert left the scientific editorial staff of the Encyclopédie as early as 1758.)
