Chapter 18 in The Palgrave Companion to Chicago Economics, 2022, pp 421-443 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Mary Jean Bowman was a relevant figure in the Department of Economics at the University of Chicago of the 1960s and 1970s, especially in the areas of education and economic development. This chapter analyses Bowman’s career and her major contributions to economics, including both her academic work and her work on the institutional development of certain aspects of economics, notably the economics of education. We discuss her contribution to the development of the emerging field of the economics of education in the 1960s and 1970s, including by fostering interactions between economists and educationalists and between education economists and those working in policy positions and in international organisations. The chapter also highlights Bowman’s role as a leading figure in a generation of female economists that were carving out a place at a time of overwhelming male dominance in economics and wider academia.
