Chapter Chapter 3 in Whole Earth, 2022, pp 35-56 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract The purpose of this chapter is to explore the role of ideas which then affect human behavior, which in turn can alter ideas. Further, there is a tendency in capitalist modernity to have a series of abstractions which presume to objectively describe human behavior, but which also structure it. The effect of these abstractions is to remove agency, because behavior is circumscribed in a series of discrete institutions which are established and performed by these concepts, such as work and home, and the public/private divide. Finally, these concepts do not describe the effect of human behavior on the environment, and so any such interactions are invisible. An examination of these ideas and institutions can help increase awareness of the essential interaction of humans and earth. In fact, these interactions can affect the “means of life,” such as air, water, and regular temperature.
